Mkombozi's BBBS growing beyond Moshi in 2010
Recruiting mentors in Arusha for "Big Brother, Big Sister"
It's early 2010, but Mkombozi has already begun to extend its "Big Brother Big Sister" (BBBS) intervention into Arusha; specifically, into the Mkombozi target community Unga Limited where there are high populations of vulnerable children and families.
When it was first developed, BBBS only recruited mentors for children in Mkombozi's residential center. Then in 2009, BBBS stepped into the community by identifying mentees (in collaboration with teachers and community leaders) in Rau Primary School in Moshi town. The objective in this expansion was to increase the intervention's sustainability and local ownership.
Thus, by expanding BBBS into Arusha in 2010, Mkombozi hopes that it can further prevent children from migrating to the streets as a result of insufficient guidance and support from their families and surroundings.
In fact, on the 19th February, Mkombozi delivered a workshop in Arusha to introduce the BBBS intervention. The workshop was attended by local leaders from Unga Limited, Arusha Municipal Community Development officers, representatives from the District Commissioner's office, Police Officers, Most Vulnerable Children's committees and other NGOs working with children. The outcome of this learning event was that Mkombozi created understanding among key stakeholders about the purpose and potential of BBBS in Unga Limited.
Following the reccommendations of the local government in Unga Limited, Mkombozi's next step is to introduce the intervention to local residents during street-level meetings. In the meantime, during the month of March, Mkombozi will also undertake recruitment of Big Brothers and Sisters in Moshi and Arsuha towns...
