Mentoring (BBBS and e-Mentoring)

Program overview:

Mkombozi's mentoring support services are two-fold:

(1) Big Brothers Big Sisters (BBBS): Mkombozi is the first East African BBBS mentoring program. BBBS is the oldest (1904) and largest mentoring program in the world. It operates country-specific programs that recruit, train and supervise volunteers in one-to-one mentoring relationships with children at risk of not reaching their potential because of familial or environmental constraints or limitations. At Mkombozi, we believe the BBBS model offers not only support to vulnerable children, but that it is an ideal mechanism to reinvigorate and empower local communities. With suitable training, mentors become a valuable community resource to support and assist families and children who struggle daily with poverty, conflict and a lack of access to social support.

(2) e-Mentoring: In partnership with naomba.com (East Africa's largest portal) and icouldbe.org (a US-based non-profit), Mkombozi is participating in the first online mentoring program in Africa that will eventually serve schools throughout the region. Volunteer e-Mentors give a small amount of their time each week (less than 1 hour) to correspond online with an Mkombozi boy who is registered as a student with icouldbe.org. Specifically, mentors help their mentees to understand and develop ideas such as saving money, planning for the next few years of life, and developing skills which help him grow personally.
